Ways of Seeing Artificial Intelligence

Ways of Seeing Artificial Intelligence
Ways of Seeing Artificial Intelligence

“We only see what we look at. To look is an act of choice”. John Berger. Ways of Seeing. 1972. https://www.ways-of-seeing.com/

I wanted to connect with my theme: “I want to …. build a bridge between the time you could see, hear and touch the innards of technology, to the time now when it feels more opaque and slips between your fingers like a will-o-the-whisp in a marsh at dusk.” Jabe Wilson, The Poetry of Liquid Sunshine, 2025, In Press. https://jabeonai.com/poetry-of-liquid-sunshine/

How do you see your personal Technology in your hand? How do you see Artificial Intelligence, and the Cloud?  Is it some collection of credulous fairy tales of beautiful metaphors and anthropomorphic analogies?

What does it mean to “save your photos in the cloud”? To “have a conversation with an LLM”?

Do you see the warehouses full of complex wiring cooled by water and using precious energy very much physically rooted, or does your mind’s eye conjure a misty cloud of digital petals floating beautifully in an azure sky? I hope it is the former, but fear it could be the latter, as you gulp down that cool aid. Take the A.c.I.d. Cool Aid Test 😉

Upcoming, here on #JabeOnAI –  I will be developing some themes around “Ways of Seeing Artificial Intelligence” to echo John Berger, and later to echo the epic work of James Bridle who in his 2019 radio series “New Ways of Seeing” speaks of  the nuts and bolts of what actually makes up entities like the cloud: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000458m

More soon.
